My view on norms!

I believe that norms are definitely needed when it comes to dealing with groups of people or teams.  These groups are comprised of individuals from all different backgrounds and walks of life who hold diverse beliefs and values.  Often times, these beliefs and values are not known until a disagreement arises.  To avoid this, norms (which are simply ground rules) should be created with input from everyone so that all parties involved have their voice heard, boundaries are clear and everyone is on the same page.  It also ensures that time is not waisted ,throughout the course of the meeting, dealing with issues that deviate from the task at hand because items have already been put in place to handle issues that may come up.  Each group is established with a common goal in mind and the closer you stick to the game plan to achieve the goal, the better!

  1. People know how to treat others and if they choose to mistreat their colleagues, no amount of norms or ground rules is going to change that. Although, people should use a little more tact and consideration when dealing with people in professional settings.

  2. Very well stated Ms. Jefferson! I enjoyed your blog. There should always be a set of ground rules for people to follow. People need structure.

  3. Reply to your blog....I completely agree! When groups are established, they have a goal in mind. Why wait until something arises to address it. All precautions should be taken in order to avoid uneccessary disagreements and that can be handled through norms.

  4. I agree that setting boundaries have a positive impact when creating norms. Although, creating norms can create tension, it often times allow individuals who don't usually give there input a chance to give there opinion with out prejudice.
